The Swiss Society for Optics and Microscopy (SGOEM) had its auspicious beginnings as the former Swiss Committee for Optics. The Society assumed its present form in 1969 and has worked to unite into a single body the interests in optics and electron microscopy of the Swiss government and other national research and technology organizations. Visitors to this site are welcome to explore the exciting history of achievements in electron microscopy research in Switzerland by examining the book History of Electron Microscopy in Switzerland.
The SGOEM serves an indispensable role in Swiss electron microscopy and optics research and represents the interests of Switzerland in various national and international professional organizations. The Society’s primary mission is to encourage and facilitate the development of contacts between workers, scientists, and researchers in academia and commercial organizations. The Society is also active in fostering an interest in related technology areas among laypersons and non-scientists in Switzerland and abroad.
The Society produces and disseminates information in order to facilitate the exchange and sharing of technology, experience, and research results between organizations worldwide. SGOEM offers financial support to Society members for the purpose of participating in international conferences and meetings abroad.
The Society is a proud member of the prestigious Schweizerische Akademie der Naturwissenschaften (SANW) and the Schweizerische Akademie der Technischen Wissenschaften (SATW) organizations.
The Society is also a member of many other organizations and federations including the International Committee for Optics (ICO), the International Federation of Societies for Electron Microscopy (IFSEM), the European Optical Committee (EOC), the Committee of European Societies for Electron Microscopy (CESEM), the International Committee on the Science of Photography (ICSP), and the European Optical Society (EOS).
